Are You Still Undecided? Then Maybe You Should Just Stay Home.

Okay, that’s it. I’m officially spent.

Last weekend, some friends and I walked a few neighborhoods in Reno to Get Out the Vote for Obama (in honor of my cousin, Logan — it was really nice). We, of course, encountered a number of “I’m not sure who I’m voting for” people. And then this week, our local paper endorsed Mitt Romney — apparently “It wasn’t an easy decision.”

Well you know what? It is an easy decision. If you pay attention, read, bother to find out how the candidates stand on issues, and then have actual opinions about those issues yourself, it’s a really, really easy decision.

If, however, you leave your decision up to things like: how much do I like him? Or did he seem angry/tired/snarky/happy/condescending/constipated/thirsty at that debate? Or who has the scariest commercials? Then frankly, you have a rough road ahead. And to be honest, I kind of hope you just don’t vote.

If you are, for example, one of these damn people, I hope you don’t vote.

However, if you do happen to be someone who wants to get some concrete answers to questions that actually matter, then here. Maybe this will help:

Vote Obama If…

  • You think birth control pills should be covered by health insurance just like other medicines because being able to decide when/if you’re going to become pregnant is a major factor in the health and happiness of women as well as the economic stability of their families.
  • You believe abortion should remain safe and legal. There will probably be at least two Supreme Court appointments in the next term. If you vote for Romney, Roe v. Wade will be overturned. This is not a joking matter.
  • You think that people making more than $250,000/year can afford to pay a little more in taxes. And vote for Obama if you don’t believe the Republican B.S. that taxing the rich kills the economy — remember that the top marginal tax rate was 70-91% from WWII until Reagan became president, and during this period, our economy grew like crazy.
  • You understand that our economy was like a hemorrhaging patient when Obama came into office, and he successfully stopped the bleeding. The economy is now slowly recovering from its very serious injuries. This is frustrating, but electing Romney would be like ripping out our stitches, running down the hall, and screaming, “I’m still bleeding! I’m still bleeding! And keep your government hands off my Medicare!”
  • You have more patience than a toddler and understand that we can’t have everything we want “right now.”
  • You believe women should make the same amount of money as men do for doing the same job.
  • You like that insurance companies can’t just drop you for some lame technicality — which they used to do whenever possible if you suddenly got sick.
  • You would prefer not to start another war in the next four years. So far Romney has called out Russia, China, Iran, and Syria (it’s been a few hours since I last heard him speak, so I may have missed a couple of countries). Words have consequences — remember George W’s “Axis of Evil” comments and how well that worked out for us…

Vote Romney If…

  • You think it’s possible to pay down our debt without raising taxes or cutting government programs. Romney says he’ll cut taxes by 20% on all Americans, cut corporate taxes, increase military spending, and maintain current spending on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. How? Apparently he’ll save enough money to balance the budget by: 1) closing more loopholes (those are going to have to be some big ass loopholes); and 2) taking the 20% of federal spending that he thinks he can touch and nickel and diming it to death (because we all know that the .01% going to PBS and .008% going to Planned Parenthood are the real budget busters).
  • You believe the government should be allowed to tell you who you can and cannot marry.
  • You’re impressed by Mitt saying he can create 12 million jobs over the next four years even though the non-partisian Congressional Budget Office has already said that 12 million jobs are going to be created over the next four years no matter what (actually, just don’t vote — this should be one of the “too dumb to vote” questions).
  • You believe disabled veterans, seniors on social security, and active duty soldiers are all sucking off the government.
  • You truly believe he and Paul Ryan are going to “reform” safety net programs for food and healthcare, not gut them. And vote for them if you think churches and private groups will be able to cover the gap just fine. And definitely vote for them if you think the only people deserving of help are those who go to said churches or pander to said groups, or are cute children who will bring in money from donors if they get sick (because lord know nobody’s going to hold a pizza fundraiser or garage sale for an ugly homeless dude).
  • You just really, really can’t stand the fact that there’s a Black guy in the White House. Because let’s just stop the bullshit. That’s really what a lot of this is about.

So you see? Easy peasy. All of this undecided stuff is just. . . well. . . a bunch of malarky.

And like I said before, if you’re still confused — for the sake of all of us — just stay home.

That t-shirt makes me throw up a little (but there isn’t much left after Ann Coulter’s latest)…

I know — sadly, it wasn’t hard to find.

And Ann? Just when you think she can’t say anything worse…

I love you, too.

Living in KY, it’s hard to find other liberal-minded people (at least, it’s hard to get people to admit they’re liberal). That’s one of the reasons I love your political posts. It’s nice seeing someone else with some sense.

Although, that t-shirt should be burned, and the person wearing it, well, I won’t even go there. Morons.

I know. The shirt is repulsive. Try explaining it to kids.

And I’m so glad to have found you too!

Really, what is it with all the “undecided” voters? I don’t think they really exist. It’s a media myth.

OK, maybe a handful of people don’t know, but certainly not enough to impact the election.

What I think is there are:

a) people who are old school and keep their politics private. (not me…Go Obama!)

b) people voting in a way that might go against the traditional voting track of their social and familial circle.

c) people who say they are undecided because that sounds better than “I haven’t been paying attention and probably won’t vote anyway.”

And just in case it hasn’t been said enough, LOVE YOU Tammy. 🙂

Yeah, I think that’s a good analysis. Unfortunately, I’m afraid the majority fall into “c.”

And I love you too. We are warriors in the same army.

Um, I think that Green party dude…

Possum October 27, 2012, 10:37 pm

I kinda hope his car breaks down and he has to walk through a less than all pristine white neighborhood….let’s see how that works for him. (The card carrying t shirt wearing racist).
and for anyone who CARES…
I took my 20 yr old to early voting today. His FIRST time to vote in a Presidential Election.
I watched the debates with both my 11 and my 14 yr old. I pointed out the inconsistancies and blatant lies that were told. I showed them WHY I believe what I do. I explained why I think Romney even has a little bit of a chance…simply he is rich, he is white and people are don’t realize that they CAN vote against their party lines.
Quite honestly if Mitt were a democrat I would be voting just about any party but his.
Hell I would write in Big Bird!! He is a dangerous man. Very very dangerous and I think many people are missing that. He is dangerous for EVERY segment of the population that is not RICH, WHITE and MALE. That’s a whole lot of people…who just really don’t understand what will happen if he wins.
and those ‘undecided’…that’s bullshit.
They HAVE decided. They just don’t want to say they have. Those people on the debate panel I just wanted to shake. I was shocked by the women especially….3 of the 4 who were interviewed after said they would vote for Mitt.
Were they even LISTENING???
Did they not hear his women needed to leave early to cook dinner and get the kids comment???
He has already said he will take our right to choose…
he has made it clear that a woman’s role is to back her man not to bring home the bacon whether that’s what that family needs or not…
I just don’t understand why this race is as close as it is…it shouldn’t be. I am hoping that all the 47%-ers vote. I am hoping that those who supported Obama 4 yrs ago come back and support him again.
My mom doesn’t like Mitt but thinks Obamacare will mess up her medicare. She doesn’t understand how it will effect her..and other retired people who depend on medicare for all their healthcare. If Obama would lay it out for THEM…he would have their votes. Now they are scared. They are voting out of fear and are just WANTING answers.

Tammy October 27, 2012, 11:44 pm

I know. I know, I know, I know. It makes you want to smack your head against a wall. I just keep thinking, are these women just totally self-loathing? How else could they possibly find what he says acceptable? He’s all but come out and said we should all be barefoot and pregnant. Really. Not exaggerating.

Your post packs a powerful punch! This picture is crazy. I saw a racist bumper sticker today against Obama, and was shocked. I don’t know why. But, I was.
