Bad TV Moms. And. . . Discuss

– Posted in: TV, Worst Mom Randomness

I was googling “worst moms” the other day (just basically being lazy and trying to find an old blog post), and I ran across an old article from The Stir. If you don’t read The Stir, it’s good fun. Basically a whole bunch of fun chick topics all rolled into one place.

Anyway, I came across an article about the “8 Worst Moms on TV.” The picks that I was most familiar with (due to the fact that I apparently don’t watch a lot of “cool” shows) were Bree Van de Camp from Desperate Housewives, Cindy Walsh from Beverly Hills 90210, and Ellis Grey from Grey’s Anatomy. Everyone else. . . well, apparently I need to get out more. Or stay in more. Whatever.

So who’s your pick for worst mom on television? I really haven’t seen enough episodes of these shows to make a truly fair assessment (however here I go anyway being Miss Judgy Von Judges-A-Lot), but I think I’d have to go with basically any of the women on The Real Housewives. Of wherever. I know they’re not technically characters because they’re playing themselves. But that almost makes it worse since every single one of them strikes me as having two top bad mom qualities: 1) self-centered and 2) unable to listen. Not to mention, they’d probably freak if their kids wanted to dress themselves like mine do (the other day, my 7-year-old daughter wore a pink and white striped dress, dark gray socks, and tennis shoes to a party).

Anyway, what do you think? One thing I do have to say I love about bad TV mothers — they sure make me feel a whole lot better. So that’s worth something.

Clearly, I too am not current on TV. The first character who came to mind was Peggy Bundy from Married with Children. I think they have stopped reruns on it.

As I have teenage girls, certain movie moms strike terror in my heart. For example in Mean Girls, Amy Poehler played Regina George's mom….tragically hip and offering the girls cocktails as after school refreshment.

Signing off to see if I can catch You Tube clips of the profiled characters in the article, so I have some idea of what's current.
You Tube…visual pop culture Readers Digest (OK, that's a reference I'll have to explain to my kids).

Peggy Bundy is one of the first that came to my mind, too. And I LOVE Mean Girls. It completely got past me that Amy Poehler was the mom (I saw it a long time ago). She was such a great character.

But yeah, I think you and I need to catch up on some stuff.:)

OK, so I’m afraid I haven’t watched TV in a long time, so allow me to revisit my youth for a moment.

First, I’d say Mrs. Brady. I can totally get a pink and white striped dress, gray socks and tennis shoes; but the way Mrs. Brady let her kids dress was just plain cruel.

Next, I’d say 99 (Get Smart). Mostly I think my problem with her is that she allowed a child to have Max as a father.

Finally, I’d say Mrs. Roo (you know, Kanga’s mom who lives about a block away from Pooh Corner). Roo was like 7 years old and would just take off with such responsible folks and Winnie the Pooh and Tigger for the whole day with not so much as a “have a good time, dear” from mom. That’s bad parenting in my book.

My recent post Yardwork: there’s a gene for that. I just don’t have it.

Mrs. Roo. Now that's one I never would've thought of. I don't know — I think Kanga is smarter than most of the adults put together, so he's probably good. Not to mention, they live in a forest without any nature predators. The biggest danger they encounter is getting stuck in a hole or running out of honey.

Kanga is the mother, Roo is the baby. They are stuffed animals so they have different rules. Im not sure what horrible fate could happen. Now the mother/s of the nameless "Rabbit's Friends and Relations" need some birth control. Which leads me to Michelle Duggar she wins. Brought a premie into a home crawling not only with the relations but with a camera crew etc. Has her older daughters raising her younger ones. Limits breastfeeding so she can conceive again sooner. Yup, Michelle Duggar.

Oh, yes, yes, yes. How could I have gotten that wrong? @IveBecomeMyParents, how did you get that wrong? So embarrassing. Anyway, Michelle Duggar — good one! She's insane in the brain. I always joked that part of my mind left with each placenta, and I had two kids, so. . .
