BlogHer “Voices of the Year” Loser Link-Up

When I was in 8th grade, I — try to contain yourselves — tried out for cheerleading.

In our school, this was a rather humiliating process — one where you had to perform in front of the entire school and then get voted to be on the squad. I ended up just edging out the new girl for second-to-last place. I was helped, I’m sure, by the huge bouquet of balloons that my mother had delivered to me in front of everyone during the tryout (do not ask…).

Anyway, I was bummed but not devastated by the loss. I knew, deep down, that I wasn’t cheerleader material. I was “smart girl” material. And you know teenagers. They can only handle so many boxes at one time.

But the one thing in my life that I’ve always felt confident about, the one thing that’s very rarely been a source of insecurity for me, is writing. I could always write. My grandfather was a journalist. My grandmother wrote a memoir. It’s in my DNA.

So today, when I got an email from BlogHer that I hadn’t been chosen as one of their 2013 Voices of the Year, I was bummed. And — not to be a completely arrogant twot — kind of pissed. This is what I’m good at (ends sentence with preposition). This is my strength. If writing were a cage fight, I’d be dressed like a Roman gladiator and wielding a big-ass flail.

My only consolation is that the list of losers is bursting with people I love to read (although hardly ever get to). After seeing who else was carried out dead on a stretcher, I feel a bit better.

WWM Loser Link Up So here’s my idea. If you’re a VOTY loooooser, link up the post or posts you submitted that didn’t make the cut (I’ve never done one of these, so we’ll see how it goes!).

And call me crazy, but I have a suspicion I won’t be the only gladiator with a flail.

Yeah um so…I wasn’t feeling so bad. Until I read this! lmao

Now I’m all up in loserville. Thanks, babes! 😉

Linking up. PS: mine is long. Maybe that’s why I was axed.

Well you know, if you’re a GOOD blogger, your posts are supposed to be *this* long and posted *this* often in *this* font. So unless you’re doing that…;)

And hey, I’m here to serve. Just helping the masses.

I’m not a blogger, and I don’t even follow blogs. Except yours. Ever since I found it, I’ve read every new post, and many of your old posts too. I like to read your blog at the end of the day when the kids are finally sleeping and I feel drained and am usually regretting some questionable parenting tactic. Be encouraged that your writing is refreshingly honest and connects many of us readers to our shared human-ness. Recognition is nice when you get it, but sadly the best things often go unrecognized. In fact, there are probably 20 things I should thank someone for right now. I should probably start with my mom…

Lindy, it’s comments and emails from people like you that make me sure I’ll die in anonymity, appreciated by only a select few until after I’m dead. Like Van Gogh. I just love you to pieces.

BlogHer wasn’t even on my radar, until one of my favorite bloggers wrote about being chosen and then I went to the BlogHer site to see the list of winners, where I saw even more of my favorite bloggers on the lists.

I guess not realizing that it was even going on makes me a loser too, huh?

Put it this way. You keep up with my blog on a regular basis and that other blogger’s blog, which means you’re more on top of things than I am. I have a hard time even reading my own stuff.

And feel free to link up something you like. You big loser…;)

I just read a blog post by the biggest twat in the world about how she expects the hotel to treat her, the Queen – made me glad I wasnt going because if she is represenitive of even 10 percent of the women going – I’d be seething with rage the whole time. And I just have to read about the new poll tax – excuse me Voter ID laws to do that.

Tammy July 2, 2013, 9:26 pm

Okay, you’re going to have to tell me who that is in secret.

I have applied and been denied to the Blogher network in general! 🙂

Yeah, I don’t get the feeling I float their boat. I made their 2011 list and failed to submit in 2012, but they never take anything I write. Sometimes I wonder if I’m just not palatable for the masses. Or maybe I’m just really high and can’t write my way out of a paper sack.

We wish we had more time and less entries and that would make the choices easier, but because we have a limited keynote capacity and thousands of submissions, so we can assure you that it’s not personal. Keep in keeping on and you never know what will happen in 2014!

Tammy July 4, 2013, 11:09 pm

Thanks Momo! I appreciate the encouragement. I know the people who have to comb through the entries have a mammoth job to do. I don’t envy them at all. And rest assured. I will keep on keepin’ on. AND see you in 2014 (that is, if I don’t screw up like I did in ’12 and forget all together…).
