Is Facebook Plugging the Walmart Spring?

– Posted in: Angry Tammy, Blogging, Corporatism, Mean People, Politics, Worst Mom Rants

Something really disturbing happened to me on Facebook today. Deep down I’m hoping there’s a complicated, techy, and completely legitimate explanation for it, but I’m fearing the worst.

First, an explanation. Many of you know I have what’s called a “fan page” for World’s Worst Moms. Fan pages are different than personal pages. When I post something on my fan page, there’s a special algorithm that dictates who sees it. In fact, lately there’s been a whole bunch of hubbub because Facebook has moved to a money-making model wherein if I want more of my 1000ish followers to see my posts, I actually have to pay for it. This happened, coincidentally, shortly after their stock went public and quickly tanked.

Actually, if I want any decent number of people to see my posts, I have to pay for it. And even then, the numbers sort of suck. Just as an example, if I post some random thought, somewhere in the neighborhood of 25-30% of people will see it. If I attach one of my blog posts to it, that number drops drastically. For instance, I reached about 210 people when I put a link to my blog in a Facebook post. When I turned around and re-posted it, but put the link in the comments, I reached 375 (it knows).

Facebook claims it will double the number of people who see my posts if I pay them $5. That’s a lot of money because if you figure I post 5 to 10 times a day, that would be about $1000 a month. Yeeeaaah.

But on to the disturbing part. If you haven’t already heard — and chances are, based on what I’m about to tell you, you haven’t — Walmart employees are attempting to organize and strike on Black Friday. This is a big frickin’ deal. They aren’t part of a union, so there’s no one to help them all get organized. Or protect them. Or back them up in any of this.

Call it the “Walmart Spring.”

So in an effort to support these brave folks, I posted a petition from Credo on my Facebook page. And after four hours, guess how many views it had gotten?

Two.

That’s right, two.

Just to give you a comparison, after only three hours, I had 207 hits on some silly little post about the kids.

And even 144 hits after four hours on a story I shared (about a jerky, hypocritical congressman).

So what I’d like to know is, what’s the deal? Is there really something despicable going on here? Is Facebook part of some bigger conspiracy to help suppress the spread of this movement through social media?

Or is this just some weird. . . glitch.

I’ve been disturbed enough about the Facebook promoting fees. How they’ve basically destroyed a level playing field where the “little guy” with good content can compete equally with some big behemoth. It’s like Citizens United for social media. Once again, the money gets to talk.

But this? This is just plain nefarious.

Please. Someone. Tell me I’m wrong.

*By the way, if you want to help Walmart employees, many who are paid less than a living wage, you can contribute to buy grocery cards so they can feed themselves and their families. They’ll be losing wages during the strike.

I’ve noticed that you had been putting your posts in the comments for awhile now. Way to stick it to the man!

We’re not the only ones who have noticed the stupid changes in The Facebooks. I’ve seen a lot of blogs about it lately. It’s been happening forever now. If I were better at calling people like I should, I would have abandoned ship long ago.

I’m not sure if it’s The WalMart trying to procure The Facebooks in their (obviously brilliant) attempt to take over the world that are blocking our links, but I’d say it’s a pretty decent theory. I’ve always been a sucker for a good conspiracy.

It’s amazing what a difference it makes when you put the link in comments. I learned that just recently. I don’t know how people like you and I are supposed to keep up with this stuff. Truly, I just want to concentrate on writing stuff. I never would’ve thought I’d be looking at things like SEO or FB algorithms when I started that first blog on Blogger.

I really wish we could all just jump to Google+ but it’s such a pain in the butt.

This is horrendous. First, I had no idea that fan pages were being charged for any comments posted. Second, I’m no conspiracy theorist, but the suppression seems undeniable here. Shocking and disappointing!

It’s just greed, pure and simple. If you think about it, FB gets to sell advertising on its pages, collect data from us to target their ads, and then leaves it to all of us to provide the content. All they have to do is keep the platform running.

Do I think WM would rather buy influence online than pay decent wages????

Of course. I hate every.single.thing that.company stands for.

Me too. My daughter and I have gone in there once in 8 years, and when we got to the door, she started yelling, “We made it out alive! We made it!”

I see all your posts, but then I hovered over the “liked” button and checked off “show in feed”. If every one of your 1000ish did this, they would also see it.

But it is weird that it seems to be a hit or miss.

Thank you! I know, I need to get everybody to do this. Hey, everybody — do this.;)

Absolutely agree! It’s no longer paranoia–Walmart is not the savior of the country and working class just because they offer inexpensive products. They have consciously and systematically redefined (and eroded) the value of a job.

And they cost the US tax payer so much money! Because we’re picking up the tab for all the employees who can’t afford healthcare or other basic things like FOOD! All due to the fact that they’re screwing these people over.

Andrea November 17, 2012, 7:17 pm

Wait,, so is it possible I don’t suck and Facebook is dictating how many. People see my posts? That would be a bit of comfort. Does blogger mess with peeps too, because sometimes people I follow mysteriously disappear, then reappear!

Yes, it’s possible you don’t suck at FB. You don’t suck period. You’re awesome.:)

Wow. This whole “pay to promote” thing is one thing…but to think that they can twist the algorithm to benefit some and not others? This burns me.

I know. It’s so disturbing in a “taking over the world slowly” kind of way.

Oh wow, I knew FB sucked (I didn’t know if it was just my page). Thanks for the tip about posting links to blog posts in the comments section. I had no idea. How does it figure this out? Weird. I mainly use my FB community page as a means of letting people know there’s a new post. Sucks.

I know. Honestly, I’m also a total social media spaz and have never been able to figure out the magic formula to driving massive numbers of people to anything I ever do. I’m always amazed at people who can hop online and suddenly have thousands of followers. Clearly they know something I don’t.
