The Gay Dad Project Needs Everybody’s Help

As much as I bitch and complain about technology, one thing I love about the internet is its ability to help people. Myself included. I can’t tell you how many times I would’ve been shut up in this house, feeling all alone if it weren’t for my laptop.

Anyway, I came across someone who needs our help the other day, and she’s working on a truly beautiful, potentially life-changing film called The Gay Dad Project Documentary. 

In a writerly way, I could swoon about Erin Margolin in general. But for the purposes of this post, let’s focus on the fact that she’s one of the founders of The Gay Dad Project. Erin grew up in a “typical” family with a mom, dad, and two younger brothers. Then one day, when she was a teenager, her father told the family he was gay. What followed was an incredibly difficult road as Erin learned to understand and cope with what had happened to her family, her father, and herself.

Erin’s hope is that through acceptance and understanding, no other child will ever have to experience her confusion and pain. The take home here is that if no one ever feels the need to hide in the closet, then other people won’t get hit with the door when someone’s coming out of it.

Erin and her cohorts are making a movie about other families who’ve had similar experiences. And maybe they’ll help someone sitting at home with just a laptop. Someone who’s feeling very alone.
