The Under-Appreciated Microwave

– Posted in: Complaining, First World Problems, Okay That's Funny, Personal Insanity

There are so many things I could write about today. My friend’s niece who died suddenly from a brain tumor. My run-in with yet another pharmacist. And, of course, there’s always the puppy. But instead, I’m going to go with something really hard-hitting:

The microwave.

A hole in our kitchen. And our hearts. . .

You laugh but when was the last time you were without a microwave? Ours blew up yesterday, and I’m officially freaked out to discover how much we use the thing. If it turns out that they do indeed give you cancer, then we’re long past help.

Who knew how often I rewarmed my coffee. Or heated up leftovers. Or made pre-cooked bacon (Yes! I admit it! We eat pre-cooked bacon. So clearly if the microwave doesn’t get us, the bacon will).

And melted cheese! Think back to your childhood — that is, if you’re old like I am and didn’t have a microwave until you were around ten.  Remember the days of nachos being an exotic food that could only be acquired at a movie theater, 7-11, or high school football game? I mean, unless you bought goo in a jar. Because who the heck could melt regular cheddar cheese on chips at home? But now we do it practically every day! On chips. And crackers. And tortillas. Hell, yesterday, the kids almost starved!

I’m suddenly feeling transported back to the 1970s. Every time I look into the kitchen, I expect to see my parents’ avocado green refrigerator and a toaster oven. And I’m having an overwhelming desire to drink Tang.

So come back to us, beloved microwave. My tepid coffee fails to quench my thirst. The babes cry out in the night, sick from longing for melted cheesiness. And lo, the oven doth taketh too long. . .

Sometimes, you just don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.

*As if you had to ask, photo by Partly Sunny (because no, I do not let random people into my kitchen to take photos and then put them on flickr). And by the way, did you notice how many exclamation points I used in this post? I hardly ever use exclamation points! Can you see how upset I am about this?! Can you see!?!

And yeah, I'm old enough to remember NOT having a microwave. LOL I totally get it.

Do you even have regular popcorn kernels? I remember the first time I bought them to make caramel corn, and must've read the directions 7 times! Good luck with your cold food options! Unless the toaster is working?

When we moved to Scotland, we lived in a tiny flat with no microwave and no counter space to even put one. We lived a year and half without and and I was actually amazed at how little we thought of needing it. Popcorn was the big thing I missed though so now that we have a microwave, that becomes the main thing we use it for…although having an electric kettle to boil water super fast is also a nice help!

First, I'm so sorry to hear of your friend's niece. How heartbreaking.

Second, all hail the radiation-emitting wonder that is the microwave. We can't live without ours.

Third, OMG, the puppy cuteness. I missed that post and did a HUGE LOL when he ran inside with those dirt-filled paws. Good thing they're so cute. Also, more puppy, please.

We JUST started popping corn out of the microwave because I read some scary thing about microwave popcorn. But how weird is it that we've forgotten how to make popcorn?

PartlySunny May 18, 2012, 5:53 am

What? Is this because of the solar eclipse or something?

I think we're all just so used to a certain speed. It's hard to slow just about anything down. It seriously did drive me nuts not being able to reheat my coffee, though.

The friend's niece thing is so, so bad. I was telling another friend that it almost seems made up because it's just so outlandishly awful.

I'll work on more puppy. He is ridiculously cute. Kind of sick, really.
