Teach Your Children Well

My 8-year-old son, Newt, is back in school and fighting aliens. As in space aliens. It’s a big job that he and a couple friends have taken on. And it’s a darn good thing because the aliens have secretly landed and are planning to do lord only knows what to the hapless peoples of earth.

So every day, I get an update on their progress. In the last week, he’s built a remote controlled spy car, acquired a disturbing number of facts about the solar system, and learned that the aliens apparently come in and out of the school through a “little door in the bathroom stall that I can’t even fit my ginormous head through.” I think he must be talking about the sanitary napkin disposal (do they put those in men’s rooms?).

But today was my favorite debrief to date. Newt, Elfie (his 7-year-old sister), and I were driving home, and he was telling us about some new intel they’d collected. Turns out the aliens “love pollution and hate the sun.”

To which Elfie replied, “So the aliens are even worse than Republicans!”

Yes, honey, yes.

But not by much.

Hahahaha! Oh that is TOO funny!!! I am loving the fact that he is so imaginative and making an awesome full blown game out of the alien thing (kids have the greatest minds!).

She is very perceptive! I love Newt's imagination. They get lost in the worlds they create don't they? x

Wouldn't you love to read that as an allegorical short story (aliens as republicans)? Fits in with my belief that kids know more than they are letting on.

It's crazy what they come up with. But looking back, I guess we used to do the same thing. It's all very "dangerous."

Hey! Good to see you! I need to stop by your blog. Anyway, yes, that's sort of her thing — being very perceptive. I'm sure it'll serve her well in the future. And scare the hell out of me.

I haven't seen that movie — "Cowboys vs. Aliens." Is that what it's really about?;)

Yeah, I had a hard time not wrecking the car!

You better give Newt a pen and paper now and start him on his writing career– it will be a good sideline if his singing doesn't pan out. What an imagination! And poor Elfie. If she only knew the truth, lol.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he becomes a writer. You wouldn't believe the stuff he comes up with. Actually, you in particular would probably get a real kick out of it.

And yes, poor Elfie. Thing is, I think she can handle the truth! She's pretty tough.
