With Comedy, It’s All About Timing — Especially When You Put a Baby in an Oven

So there’s a little bit of hubbub online about some people who staged a photo of their grandbaby in an oven. The way the story goes (supposedly — remember that we’re dealing with the internet here) is that the baby’s dad left the kid with the grandparents for the first time and was doing the typical newbie-parent, nervous thing. So in an effort, I’m assuming, to add a little levity to the situation and mock him for questioning their parenting skills, they set up the “We’re so incompetent that we’re cooking your kid” photo.

The reactions to this have run the spectrum from “Call DCFS” to “That’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen” to “Everybody needs to get the sticks out of their asses.” So here are my thoughts (since I’m sure everyone cares…).

Today, as the mother of 8 and 10-year-old children who are half-grown, broken-in, and prone to joking themselves, I find this totally hysterical.

Ten years ago, not so much.

Ten years ago, as an exhausted, post-partum depressed, first-time mom who was incredibly touchy and insecure about how I was feeling, whether or not my relatives were too involved or not involved enough, and a host of other worries that now seem really ridiculous, I would not have found this the least bit amusing. In fact, it probably would have put me over the edge.

They say that’s the thing about comedy — it’s all about timing. But you also have to know your audience. And in my experience, new parents are usually too tired to have much of a sense of humor.

So, moral of the story? Next time, put the 10-year-old in the oven. He’s still small enough, and he’ll probably think it’s hilarious.

Totally agree about the new parent thing. They are much much too stressed to find this funny! Truth be known, I find it kind of funny 🙂

I never THOUGHT I was that stressed at the time. I saw myself as very cool. Looking back, not so much.

I love the idea of putting my 10 year old in the oven. Now *that* made me laugh.

Oh, he would love that. I see your next famous Christmas montage!

I think it’s funny that it was the DAD who was nervous. In my husband’s defense, I was nervous enough for both of us…plus five other people!

I know. That is really cute and, I know this is stereotyping, generally not the case. Maybe he’s a single dad and has to do all the worrying on his own. Or maybe the grandparents really weren’t that trustworthy!

My babies were timed all wrong for this to be their Halloween costume. But it’s been cooking in my wicked little brain since before the eldest was born.

Backup plan was a mini Jabba the Hut. They’re basically just slugs anyways, right?

There IS a mini Jabba! His name is Rotta. How frightening is it that I know that. Anyway, he’s really cute. And very slug-like.

plus a 10 year old can get himself out.

i agree with you, 14 years ago: not so funny. now, clever, edgy and memorable, but a little creepy. i could never even pretend to put a baby in a turkey roaster. it’s probably due to my extremely vivid imagination.

Good point. They’re very squirrelly. I’m sure Hansel and Gretel must’ve been close to 10 because the witch ended up being no match for them at all.

And I’m totally with you on the vivid imagination thing. Don’t get me started. Because see, now you’ve gotten me started…
