Tonight, the kids and I sat around the table and cried over a lemon bundt cake.
A year ago, we had to put down our dog, Uno. The anniversary was actually yesterday, but we missed it (I blame the Ugly Dog incident). It was Elfie’s idea to get the lemon cake. Uno loved cake. Actually, he loved just about everything. But he couldn’t eat chocolate, so we’d usually make him lemon on his birthday.
Uno’s other big favorite was salmon. But I can’t cook worth a damn, and my husband was working. So the bundt cake from Costco was just about as good as it got. But it did the trick. We all talked about how much we missed him. We wept profusely. And I put the unfinished portion of Elfie’s cake on the floor where he would’ve eaten it.
“Go ahead, angel,” Newt said. “Eat as much as you want.”
We miss you big guy.
Darn it. You made me cry!
So Touching!
I know — I'm sorry. Damn dogs.
Thanks Julie. And you're not even a dog person! So I know I must've hit it.;)
Such a sweet remembrance.

If nothing else ever does, dogs certainly teach us to cry. It's how they help us be more human. I still miss them all. But "Uno" wouldn't want you to be without another canine friend for so long. I hope one finds you soon.
Actually, we may have good news about that soon. . .
This is a really sweet story. Our cat passed away recently and the kids talk about her all the time (and asking for a replacement animal, which isn't going to happen). It's sad. What a great way to remember a loved one.
