The Ironic or Not-So-Ironic Passing of the Humor Gene

All I have to say is, it’s a good thing I have a decent sense of humor. Take this morning, for example. I’m currently sort of laughing about how my husband left the dog kennel open and let the puppy escape unnoticed to wake up the boy at 5 a.m., “do his business” on the floor (the puppy, not the boy), and eat any number of forbidden objects.

Wives with good senses of humor — keeping husbands alive for centuries all over the world.

I like to think my “special brand” of happy is getting passed down to the kids. Yesterday, Elfie drew this on her giant white board:

It’s a picture of the Titanic, hitting an iceberg. The side says, “Titanic, the unsinkable ship,” and then on the front, someone’s yelling, “Captain, we’re sinking!” Irony at age seven. Take that Alanis. Take that Ms. “I don’t really know what irony is, I actually think it’s bad timing” (I know, that sounded really snarky, but I sat in dog pee this morning, so give me a break).
And then the other day, my cousin was watching The Office when the kids came over. I thought Newt was going to crack a rib from laughing. I think he was taking notes on how to make people feel uncomfortable. . .
There are parents who get jazzed watching their kids kick balls down a field or jump around on a stage. I’ve done that, and it’s made me smile. But this is the stuff that makes me really happy — definitive proof that my offspring didn’t inherit their great grandmother’s “inability to detect sarcasm” gene.
That would be way worse than rain on my wedding day. Or a free ride when I’d already paid. . .
